Furthering economic development cooperation

For the third time in a row the EMA brought German companies to Morocco. Purpose of the trip was to gain important information and contacts for the optimal development of their companies in the Kingdom. The delegation visited the regional chamber of commerce, investment centers and other economic hotspots in the four main cities Casablanca, Rabat, Kenitra and Tangiers. As a closure the delegation participated in the environment forum Eau Expo. More.

Funded by sequa GmbH, initiated by the EMA and in collaboration with the University of Rostock, EMA member Mülot Autotechnik has started a project for the retreading of tires in Morocco. This kick-off event brought together 50 important stakeholders from the ministries and economic sector, who took advantage of the launch to further deepen the integration. Several visits and bilateral talks laid the foundation for further cooperation. Read more on the sequa website.

As an introduction to the second great Hamburg Logistics Forum for the EMA region in April 2014, the EMA convened on 10 May for the first time the logistics advisory board in its premises, which will meet regularly, to define the concept and content of the forum. Thus the EMA established a unique organ of the international logistics with a focus on closer cooperation, intensive exchange and sustainable partnerships with the EMA region.

The EMA-management accompanied the state secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Hans-Jürgen Beerfeltz, to Tunis. Main focus of the trip were the role of the Ministry in the private sector and development cooperation, the employment issue and the importance of entrepreneurs for sustainable development. With the event „Am Puls der Zeit“ EMA brought together top German and Arab association leaders for a Business Speed Dating: Subsequent to the opening speech of the Tunisian consul, Mohamed Imed Torjemane, covering the current political situation in Tunisia, about 50 participants were given the opportunity to exchange with high-ranking guests on the subjects of economical, political and scientific cooperation.

As part of the extensive preparations concerning the upcoming Environment Forum for the EMA Region in Jordan, Dr. Abdelmajid Layadi, General Secretary of the EMA, together with Hermann J. Zoder, Gatcon GmbH and Vice President of the EMA, were invited for a private audience with H.R.H. Prince Hassan bin Talal, honorary president of the EMA, in which he announced his patronage and support of the German-Arab Forum. Dr. Layadi then consulted with H.E. Nayef Hmeide Al-Fayez, Jordan’s Minister of Environment.

To mark the 90th anniversary of the Amman Chamer of Commerce, Dr. Abdelmajid Layadi, General Secretary of the EMA, together with Hermann J. Zoder, Gatcon GmbH and Vice President of the EMA, traveled to Amman on invitation of Senator Riad Saifi, Member of the EMA’s advisory board. He attended the festivities under the patronage of H.R.M. King Abdullah II and was invited to an exclusive reception with Jordan’s Prime Minister, H.E. Abdullah Ensour.

A new year begins with exciting new developments – it is with deep gratitude that the EMA bids longstanding president Prof. Dr. Siedentopf farewell who regrets to resign his post. As of today, Mrs. Adelheid Sailer-Schuster, President of the Regional Office Northern Germany of the German Federal Bank will represent the EMA as the new president.

A new location for the EMA! As of today, our association is centrally located on the 4th floor of the historical building at Deichstr. 19, 20459 Hamburg. Just after the great fire in 1842, the building was constructed for an old-established trader of Hamburg. Its façade belongs to the most beautiful of the preserved buildings newly constructed after the fire. Apart from our changed location, we are of course available via the same contact data and with our usual services! More

With a presentation by the Tunisian Ambassador, H.E. Elyes Ghariani, the German-Arab Mentoring Project was officially launched today on the occasion of the EMA New Year's Reception. The project is implemented by the EMA in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth and the Federal Foreign Office. In the Arab World, Germany is perceived as a „reliable and strong partner“, said H.E. Dr. M. Higazy, Ambassador of the Republic of Egypt in Berlin. Building on this positive image, the EMA brought together almost 200 decision makers for the 1st Forum for the Mashriq and Gulf Region. Taking place on the 19th and 20th November 2012 in the Federal Foreign Office, it aimed at improving Germany’s Foreign Trade Relations. More

The EMA held their 4th General Assembly in the historic Europa-Saal of the German Federal Foreign Office. In this framework, important decisions for the future activities of the EMA were made: By unanimous decision, the members agreed to change the EMA’s charter in order to emphasize the wish for a stronger involvement of members of Arab diplomatic services.

In the framework of the German-Tunisian partnership, the first governmental consultations at the secretary of state-level took place on September 12th 2012 to deepen the cooperation between the two countries. Initialized by the EMA and fostered by the Federal Foreign Office, the German-Arab mentoring-project was addressed and particuarly appreciated by all ministries, according to a speaker of the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ): Together with the BMFSFJ, the economic and societal participation of women shall be strengthened and German-Tunisian cooperation further developed.

An international event such as the 2nd Hamburg Water Forum for the EMA Region not only builds upon existing partnerships, for example with the Arab Water Council or the water association ACUWA; furthermore it offers an excellent opportunity to create new partnerships - best exemplified by the Memorandum of Understanding signed by EMA and the Chambre de Commerce d'Industrie et d'Agriculture de Mauritanie during the Forum. Under the umbrella of economic development cooperation, both organizations are now working on deeper and enhanced economic and societal ties between Germany and Mauretania.

"My attendance allows me to be optimistic about the future“, is how the Jordanian Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, H. E. Mohammed Al Najjar, summed up the 2nd Hamburg Water Forum for the EMA Region. The event, under the patronage of Mr. Peter Altmaier, German Federal Minister for the Environment, and HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, brought together about 250 high-ranking representatives from the economy, science and politics in the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. The discussion centered around the water challenges the Arab region faces.

On August 29, the EMA celebrated its fourth birthday. First, the EMA's Executive and Advisory Board members met on a floating restaurant on the Binnenalster to discuss the EMA's current projects, the program for 2013 and the big EMA members survey. After that, a members dinner not only gave the guests the opportunity to enjoy food and a wonderful panoramic view, but also to talk about the EMA's future projects and how to get involved.

Following an invitation issued by Honorary President HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal, an EMA-delegation visited  the 4th WANA Forum in Amman. Several hundred representatives, local initiatives, scientists and entrepreneurs gathered to discuss this year’s topic “Identity”. During the exclusive Advisory Board meeting which preceded the conference, the Prince and his confidants analyzed the regional situation in the wake of the Arab Spring and formulated joint initiatives to further sustainable growth.

Project finance and the foreign engagement of small- and medium-sized German entreprises – those were the main topics of “wirtschaft.entwickelt.global” ("business.develops.globally" in English). The event took place on the 2nd of May under the patronage of both Minister Dirk Niebel and Saxony’s  Secretary of Commerce Sven Morlok.  In an enlightening presentation, Dr. Kerstin Hartsch, member of EMA’s board of management, offered insight into her projects in Morocco (© Oheimb).

An idea that especially fascinated the audience was the creation of a global standard for ethics in business.

"The healthcare sector plays a central role in German-Arab cooperation”, underlined EMA’s Secretary General Dr. Abdelmajid Layadi during his speech upon invitation of Cornelia Prüfer-Storcks, Hamburg’s Senator for Healthcare and Consumer Protection. Besides cooperating with the Service Centre in the Gulf, he also stressed the importance of expanding cooperation towards Libya and the whole of Northern Africa.

Haifa Fahoum Al Kaylani, founder and chairwoman of the Arab International Women’s Forum (AIWF), was awarded honorary EMA-membership in recognition of her outstanding work. The title was given to her in the framework of a reception in Hamburg’s town hall, hosted by Hamburg’s Senator for Justice and Equality, Jana Schiedek. Mrs. Al Kaylani announced comprehensive cooperation between EMA and the AIWF.

Almost a year ago, the uprising in Syria began – and as of yet there is no end of the violence in sight. On the occasion of this bitter anniversary, the painter and EMA-member Tarek Marestani dealt with the events in his home country. The “Homage to the martyrs of the Syrian revolution” (oil on canvas, 200x180cm) emotionally emphasizes the dramatic situation in Syria. The EMA also calls for an end of the violence and advocates lasting change in the region in the interest of the people.

The EMA is proud to announce a new prominent representative: per unanimous decision, the EMA Board of Directors voted for HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan as the Honorary President of the EMA. Cross-borders he is a highly respected representative of the Royal Family and well known for his undaunted commitment to environment, sustainability and renewable energies. On behalf of the EMA, he was already active last year as patron of the Environment Forum.
